Canadian Team Mathematics Contest
The Canadian Team Mathematics Contest (CTMC) is a fun and challenging team competition.
Audience
Teams of 6 secondary school students in any combination of grades. At least half of the problems in the Individual Event, and many problems in the Team Event, are accessible to students in grade 9 or 10.
Date
The official contest is scheduled to take place on Thursday, April 7, 2022. See official date for the current year. Teams may participate unofficially in school-organized events on or after after Friday, April 8, 2022. Contest questions and full solutions are posted online in mid June.
Format
- team questions, where team members may collaborate (45 min)
- individual problems (45 min)
- math relays — one student's answer to a question is needed by a teammate to solve the next question (45 min)
There are no calculators allowed during the Team event. Some calculators permitted during the Individual and Relay events. More information for the supervising teacher is available.
Please note that the CTMC is currently only available in English.
Mathematical Content
The curriculum and level of difficulty of the questions will vary. Junior students will be able to make significant contributions but teams without any senior students may have difficulty completing all the problems.
Location
UW Event:
- Teams from Canadian schools can register for a lottery to participate in-person or virtually in an event hosted by the CEMC.
- A team is comprised of six students and one teacher. There is a limit of one team per school.
- Registration for the CTMC lottery will open up in early November 2021 and will close on Thursday, November 25, 2021.
Unofficial Events:
- Teams meet in-person or virtually to participate in an unofficial event which takes approximately 3 hours.
- We provide access to a web site where you can download the contest materials and instructions. More information for the supervising teacher is available.

Contest Preparation
We recommend that students spend some time preparing for our contests by trying to solve problems. Many teachers use past contests in the classroom.
Recognition
Coaches may use our system to generate certificates for participants.
